UNDERSTANDING MAC ADDRESS



MAC (Media Access Control) Address -

6 bytes (48 bits)  Hexadecimal  Hardware Unique Address that Identifies  each device on the network.

Also known as - 

BIA  (Burned in Address)

Layer 2  or L2 Address 

Machine Address

Hardware Address 


00 -1A -2B- 3C-4D-5E
     24 bits                 24 bits

Manufacture         Vendor 
    Code                 Assigned


Manufacture Code is also know as OUI - Organization Unique Identifer

Each Manufacture Vendor have unique OUI 

For eg - Intel have OUI as 00:19:D1

There are plenty of website which helps to get the Manufacture Vendors name from MAC address.
