BGP PUBLIC & PRIVATE PEERING

We will focus on what is BGP Peering, Types of BGP Peering , Difference between Public BGP Peering and Private BGP Peering .

So before starting Let us first understand about Peering

What is Peering ?

Peering is just an interconnection of two or more different networks/ service providers/companies so they can exchange traffic between each other and reach each other customers.

BGP PRIVATE PEERING

Consider the Service Provider A and Service Provider B.
Both these providers are connected to Tier 1 Service Provider and they pay to Tier 1 since it will carry traffic.
If Provider A and Provider B wants to exchange heavy traffic between each others customers then they would have to do so via Tier 1 Provider which would act as a transit Provider & Provider A and Provider B need to pay Tier 1 for same.
So instead of that if they could go into mutual understanding and if they agree to connect with each other directly and establish peer between them that is known as Private peering a.k.a Bilateral peering a.k.a PNI (Private Network Interconnect)
Most of time its happens to be that these two different network are in same Datacenter or same building  which makes easy for both them to connect with each other and also to troubleshoot in case of an issue with the link.
So remember!!!! Private BGP Peering is BGP peering only between two networks (companies/providers)

BGP PEERING - PUBLIC  PEERING

PUBLIC PEERING

Now consider an additional Service Provider C as shown in the above diagram and Providers A , Provider B and Provider C wants to exchange traffic between each other.
Public Peering is peering which happens between more than 2 ISPs and which happens at IXP /IX (Internet Exchange Provider).
An IX (Internet Exchange) or IXP (Internet Exchange Protocol) is simply a Layer 2 Network where number of Providers (ISPs) gets connected.
IX provides the providers with an IP address and a switch port.
So that BGP peering can be established between the Providers.
Route Servers are present in IXP /IX with the help which Provider don’t have to configure BGP session with all other Providers they just need to have a session with route-servers.
All countries have the IXPs . India too have IXPs.
