ROUTER COMPONENTS

Today we will go through a topic which is included in CCNA course and is asked in most of Interviews!!!!!

It is also very important to understand various Router Components so as to troubleshoot and perform various tasks related to same which includes -
Password Recovery of Router
Configuration Changes in Routers
IOS upgradation of Routers
and Many more

Let's begin

Components of Router Includes -

ROUTER COMPONENTS

1) Processor

The Processor i.e CPU carry outs the instructions of the operating system i.e IOS (in Cisco) / JUNOS (in Juniper). It also control the network interfaces , Routing function etc.

2) Interfaces

Interfaces allows routers connections with other devices in the network .
Now this Interfaces would be -
Console Interface - Through which we can access the Command Prompt of the Router.
AUX port - Is for connecting to external Modem , this Modem is used as an Backup demand dial connection. It is used to login in the Router if the regular ways of login in the router fails.
Ethernet / Serial Interface - To which LAN / WAN devices are connected

3) Memory

a) ROM  - Read Only Memory

Includes instructions for POST i.e Power On Self Test . POST is performed when the router boots up and it perform hardware self test .
Includes Bootstrap program which is a program used to executes many other programs
Includes Mini IOS which is Basic IOS which allows user to execute basic level commands on the Router.

b) RAM - Random Access Memory

Fast Memory
RAM holds the running IOS image of the Router
It contents the Running Configuration of the Router
It also contents Routing Table information.
The contents of the RAM are lost once the Router is power down or rebooted .

c)NVRAM - Non Volatile RAM

Fast Memory
It contents the Start up Configuration file of the Router
It also contents the Configuration  Register value of the Router
The contents of the NVRAM are not lost once the Router is power down or rebooted .

4)Storage - Flash

The IOS image of the Router is stored in the Flash of the Router.
This is type of EEPROM i.e Electronically Erasable and Re-Programmable memory.
It retains the contents even after Router is power down or rebooted.

5)Power Supply

Power supply provides the required power to the Router. Router have an Input Power socket to which an external power cord is connected .
